Greens want reports to parliament on increases in debt

11:40 am on 4 December 2013

Australian Greens leader Christine Milne wants the federal government to report to parliament every time the national debt is increased by $A50 billion.

AAP reports Senator Milne is in negotiations with the government over a plan to axe a debt cap, rather than increase it to $A500 billion, as originally proposed by the coalition.

Instead of having a ceiling, which Labor wants limited to $A400 billion, the Greens want the government to make a detailed statement to parliament justifying any $A50 billion increase.

"There would have to be a justification for increasing the debt every time a threshold of an additional $50 billion was crossed," Senator Milne told ABC radio on Wednesday.

"We want to make sure that every single dollar of government debt is justified and debated - more scrutiny, not less."
