Ukraine government suspends officials

2:36 pm on 15 December 2013

Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych has suspended his deputy security chief and the mayor of Kiev for their alleged involvement in police violence against pro-European Union protesters.

Prosecutors are investigating claims the two officials put pressure on Kiev's police chief to use violence during protests last month.

Dozens of people were hurt when police used batons to disperse the crowd on 30 November. The protesters were angered by Mr Yanukovych's rejection of a partnership deal with the European Union, and called for his resignation.

On Saturday, tens of thousands gathered in Kiev to show their support for the president. Pro-EU protesters are camped out in the capital's Independence Square and organisers have called for another big rally on Sunday.

The BBC reports the pro-government rally is just 100 metres from the pro-European encampment.
