Anger in India over arrest of diplomat in US

There has been an angry reaction in India to the arrest of a diplomat in New York last week.

Devyani Khobragade, 39, was charged on Thursday with visa fraud. Indian reports say she was handcuffed upon arrest and strip-searched.

The BBC reports she denies visa fraud and making false statements over accusations that she underpaid an Indian maid.

The maid had complained she was being paid less than the minimum stipulated under US visa requirements.

US officials say standard procedures were followed during the arrest of Ms Khobragade, who appeared in court on Friday and was freed on bail of $US250,000.

Her lawyer said Ms Khobragade will challenge her arrest on grounds of diplomatic immunity.

The US State Department said under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, immunity applies only to acts performed in the exercise of consular duties.

On Tuesday, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde cancelled a meeting with a US Congressional delegation and his office said he was busy in parliament.

The BBC reports Congress party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and the Bharatiya Janata Party leader Narendra Modi also refused to meet the delegation, as did the Speaker of Parliament.

In addition, various privileges for American diplomats and their families such as airport passes and import clearances have been withdrawn.
