Italy to investigate migrants' treatment

3:59 pm on 18 December 2013

A political row has erupted in Italy over the treatment of migrants at a reception centre on the island of Lampedusa.

Images purportedly filmed in secret by a Syrian man and aired on Italian television show detainees being forced to strip naked in mixed company while a camp worker hoses them down, the BBC reports.

The man who took the pictures says staff routinely insult the migrants as they are being hosed.

Italy's integration minister says such activities are unacceptable in a democratic state. An official inquiry has begun.

The flow of migrants trying to reach the European Union has been fuelled by civil war in Syria and unrest in Egypt and other Arab and African countries.
