Mr Erdogan named 10 new ministers - almost half of his total roster - after talks with President Abdullah Gul.

The BBC reports former environment Minister Erdogan Bayraktar, one of those who quit, earlier urged Mr Erdogan to step down himself.

"For the sake of the wellbeing of this nation and country, I believe the prime minister should resign," Mr Bayraktar told NTV news.

His son and the sons of two other ministers were arrested on 17 December. The BBC reports all three deny any wrongdoing.

Police are investigating accusations of illicit money transfers to Iran and bribery for construction projects.

Mr Erdogan has described the police investigation as a "dirty game".
