Obamacare deadline waived

The federal government in the United States says it will offer help to anyone who misses the latest deadline to enrol for health insurance through a dedicated website.

On Monday, the government extended the deadline by a day amid high demand and technical issues.

Applicants therefore had until midnight on Tuesday to enrol for coverage beginning on 1 January.

The Obama administration said if anyone failed to finish their enrolment by that time, they could still obtain an insurance policy for the new year.

The BBC reports HealthCare.gov has been plagued by glitches since its rollout on 1 October. It became a metaphor as well as a problem in its own right.

Insurance companies have cancelled millions of medical insurance policies because they did not meet the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
