The body of a German tourist has been pulled from a car found upside down in a tree in north-west Tasmania.

A German man, 20, and a German woman, 18, were driving through the Leven Canyon on Loongana Road on Friday afternoon.

Police said he lost control of the van, which veered across the road and rolled off the side of an embankment.

The ABC reports officers found the van suspended upside down in a tree, hanging over the Mersey River.

The woman's body was trapped in the wreckage.

The man was taken to North West Regional Hospital.
