State TV blamed the protesters for the fire at the al-Azhar University where students have regularly staged protests since the army overthrew former president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July.

The Brotherhood was declared a terrorist group on Wednesday following a suicide bombing at a police building in the Nile Delta.

Five people were killed in clashes across Egypt on Friday.

Al-Azhar is one of the main centres of Sunni Muslim learning. The BBC reports the fires were brought under control by Saturday afternoon.
