Apology issued after fast food served at rest home

A health board in Scotland has apologised after fast food was served to residents in a rest home.

A member of staff at Invernevis House in Fort William went to McDonald's to order food on 27 December after the chef did not turn up for work.

NHS Highland blamed an error of judgement for the decision. It said the established procedure was for the hospital to provide food for the rest home if there was a problem with catering.

NHS Highland Lochaber district manager Joanna Hynd said: "The main priority of the care home manager was to ensure residents had something to eat.''

The food ordered included chicken nuggets, salads and vegetarian options.

A total of 21 residents were in the home on Friday.
