A Queensland woman and her teenage daughter have died of unexplained causes on the Indonesian island of Bali.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the deaths of the woman, 54, and her daughter, 14.

"Our condolences are with the family and the family have asked that their privacy be respected during this difficult time," a spokesperson said.

The ABC says the cause of the deaths is not yet clear, but there are reports that they died of food poisoning or an allergic reaction to food.

AAP reports the pair were from the Sunshine Coast and had checked into a hotel on the beachfront on Friday.

Early on Saturday morning the girl asked staff at the Padang Bai Beach Resort for help, telling them she and her mother were sick.

The pair were taken by private ambulance to a nearby medical centre, but the mother died at about 1.45am local time.

The girl was then taken to BIMC Hospital, an international clinic in Denpasar, but could not be saved.
