Cocaine hidden in crates of bananas transported to Germany from Colombia has been discovered at food wholesalers and a supermarket.
The haul was unearthed on Monday in Berlin and nearby Brandenburg state and amounts to 140 kilograms, AFP reports. Estimated to be worth €6 million, it is the second biggest cocaine seizure since 1978, police and customs officials said in a statement on Tuesday.
Employees at a discount food store in Berlin initially alerted police after finding suspicious packages in several boxes of bananas.
Further cocaine finds were also made at food wholesalers in three other Berlin districts and a town in Brandenburg, they said, without naming the businesses.
