Australian actor Chris Hemsworth is to help announce the Oscar nominations next Thursday.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Friday that the former Home and Away star will be on stage with Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs at 5.38am (local time).

The nominations are revealed at that time so they are carried live on the morning shows on the east coast of the United States, which is three hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Hemsworth, who has starred as Thor in three films, also played 1970s British Formula One ace James Hunt in Rush.

The 86th Academy Awards ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on 2 March.
