The state of Arizona has failed in an attempt to enforce a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
The US Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal by the state against a ruling by a lower court that the ban is unconstitutional.
Nine other states have enacted similar bans.
A series of Supreme Court rulings have recognised a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy before the foetus is able to survive outside the womb.
