Thai govt sticks to election date

9:39 pm on 15 January 2014

Thailand's caretaker government has confirmed a general election will be held as planned on 2 February after a meeting to discuss an Election Commission proposal to postpone it.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had invited political parties and anti-government protest groups to discuss the date, although most appear to have stayed away from the meeting, Reuters reports.

Protesters trying to oust the government remain camped in central Bangkok with no end to their protest in sight.
