Cyclone June heading for New Caledonia

6:48 pm on 17 January 2014

A tropical storm heading for New Caledonia has been named Cyclone June.

New Zealand's MetService says the storm is 400km north-west of the French territory and is expected to cross the main island on Saturday morning.

People in New Caledonia have been advised to restrict their movement and not to go to sea.

In December, 2012 New Caledonia was hit by destructive rainfall when the aftermath of Cyclone Freda crossed the territory's north after hitting Solomon Islands.
