Cyclone hits North Queensland

8:12 am on 31 January 2014

Tropical Cyclone Dylan has made landfall on Australia's northeast coast, bringing flash flooding, storm surges and strong winds

The storm began as a tropical low in the Coral Sea several days ago and officially became a Category Two cyclone on Thursday evening.

Authorities are on alert across the region as king tides are also hitting this weekend prompting forecasters to warn of high sea levels and possible flooding in some low-lying areas.

Wind speeds of up to 140 km/h are being recorded, but forecaster Michael Knepp told the ABC the storm's intensity was expected to weaken over land.
