A bobsleigh smashed into a track worker at the Winter Olympic, reportedly leaving the man with both his legs broken.

The incident happened at the start of training for the two-man bobsled competition on Thursday when the forerunner bob, which is used to clear and test the track at the beginning of the day's schedule, hit an ice maker.

Video images after the incident showed paramedics and volunteers evacuating the man who was left lying on track.

Sochi officials later confirmed the incident which took place between the exit of the final curve and the finish line and that training had been delayed.

A statement said the man was taken to hospital by helicopter.

Safety at sliding tracks has been an issue since the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver when a Georgian luger died after a crash during a training descent.
