The health of Samoan Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi is improving after hospital treatment in New Zealand, his spokesperson says.

Tuila'epa is reported to have developed an infection in his foot after stepping on a nail.

He was transferred from Samoa to be treated in a private hospital in New Zealand.

His spokesperson said he had responded well to antibiotic treatment and expected to return to Samoa early next week.
