Powerful 7.3 quake off PNG

5:59 am on 12 April 2014

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off Papua New Guinea's Bougainville Island.

The quake was centred about 75km southwest of the main town of Arawa at a depth of about 50km on Friday.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said a destructive widespread tsunami was not expected but waves could be generated along coasts in the area from a tremor of that magnitude.
