Plane take-off aborted in Melbourne

Flights were delayed briefly at Melbourne Airport after a Vietnam Airlines plane aborted take-off.

Melbourne Airport said flights were disrupted for about 40 minutes on Tuesday morning due to a "disabled" plane on the runway at Tullamarine.

One passenger said he was told the engine had failed as the A330 plane, bound for Vietnam, was about to take off.

An airport spokeswoman said the plane was not on fire and reports elsewhere of sparks and smoke coming from the plane were probably debris from the plane hitting the runway.

The ABC reports eight flights were diverted to Adelaide and a number of others were delayed.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau was investigating.
