Wilkinson, 34, is keen to end his 17-year career with a victory over the English club Saracens in this weekend's Heineken Cup final, and then a win next week in the French championship final.

He made his Test debut in 1998 at the age of 18, becoming England's second-youngest international.

Wilkinson will join the Toulon coaching staff at the end of the season.

He retires as one of only five men to score 1000 points in international rugby, with his total of 1246 second only to Dan Carter of New Zealand.

He retired from international rugby in December 2011.

Wilkinson made his debut for Newcastle in 1997.
