Australian water police are battling heavy seas to reach a New Zealand bound yacht that's sent out an SOS off the New South Wales coast.
A rescue vessel is expected to take several hours to reach the stricken yacht.
The crew of a 16 metre yacht on its way to New Zealand set off a distress beacon on Saturday night which was picked up by the Maritime Safety Authority.
The ABC reports a rescue vessel is now on its way to try to reach the boat which is about 200 nautical miles off Port Stephens.
Police say they have been advised that there are mechanical problems with the boat's engine and that there is one, but possibly two people onboard.
