Researchers in the Netherlands say they have discovered the catchiest songs of all time.

Twelve thousand participants were asked if they recognised a song, which was randomly selected from more than 1000 clips of best-selling songs, from the 1940s until the present day, the BBC reported.

The Spice Girls' debut hit 'Wannabe' is the catchiest song of all time according to the study, which was carried out for the Manchester Science Festival.

The research measured how quickly people recognised hit songs.

For 'Wannabe', the average time was just 2.29 seconds.

Lou Bega's 'Mambo No 5' took the runner-up spot with 2.48 seconds while Survivor's 'Eye of the Tiger' took third place with 2.62 seconds.

The scientists said this was an under-researched area and they planned to continue their work.
