Police have declared an emergency situation as they negotiate with an armed man in a Queensland apartment.
Officers were called to the Gold Coast complex about 11.25pm last night after reports of a disturbance.
Police said an armed man later fired a shot, before retreating to a unit in Anne Street at Southport.
They were not sure how many people were inside apartment.
On Christmas morning they were ordering people to leave the complex "for their own safety".
A public safety declaration was made about 2.10am. Police closed streets around the block and are asking people to avoid the area.
Specialist officers and negotiators are at the scene and are believed to be in contact with the man.
Light rail services were suspended as police managed the ongoing situation.
