Man killed in NSW shark attack

1:48 pm on 9 February 2015

A man has been killed in a shark attack near Ballina on the New South Wales north coast, police have confirmed.

Police said a group of surfers helped the injured man from the water at Shelly Beach just before 10:00am (local time) and despite receiving first aid, he died.

A crime scene has been established and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

All beaches from South Ballina to Lennox Head have been closed, officers said.

All swimmers and surfers have been ordered out of the water.

Today's incident followed a shark attack yesterday at Seven Mile Beach near Broken Head, about 20 kilometres north of Shelly Beach.

A surfer was taken to hospital with wounds to his back and later underwent surgery for his injuries.

Dean Gibson, a cafe owner in the area of yesterday's attack, said surfers had spoken of increased shark activity this summer.

"We do get a lot of local surfers come in and they are reporting a lot of sightings at the moment," he said.

"Some of them cannot see what sort they are but there have been a few surfers saying they have been hit from underneath their boards by what they think are sharks."
