They said Australia would be fast-tracked to the final, which would be hosted this May in Vienna.

The European Broadcasting Union said it was a daring and incredibly exciting move that would elevate the show to a "new global level".

The Australia broadcaster, SBS, which has aired Eurovision for more than 30 years, said it was thrilled Australia would be represented on the world's biggest stage.

Australia would be allowed to vote in both semi-finals and the grand final.
