A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck has struck Irian Jaya in Indonesia, the US Geological Survey says.

It said the quake was about 53 km deep and was centered 247 km west of Jayapura.
The tremor struck at 6.41am local time.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said, based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected.
