Pilgrims still arriving for World Youth Day

Late arrivals are flooding into Sydney for World Youth Day and organisers predict the number of Catholic pilgrims will exceed their initial estimates.

More than 150,000 registered pilgrims were at Darling Harbour on Tuesday to attend the opening mass, led by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell.

Organisers have estimated 215,000 pilgrims will be in Sydney before the biggest event of the festival - a mass to be celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday at Randwick Racecourse.

WYD coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher says the number of pilgrims continues to overwhelm registration centres.
