'No evidence of shots' at New York's JFK Airport

3:38 pm on 15 August 2016

Reports that shots were fired at New York's John F Kennedy International Airport appear to be false after preliminary investigations.

Police evacuated Terminal 8 while they searched for a suspect after the unconfirmed reports, New York City television station WPIX said.

However, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, said no shells had been found.

The authority tweeted that the airport had been evacuated out of an abundance of caution.

Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo told CNN there had been no injuries or arrests.

Sherwin Bryce-Pease, a correspondent with South African Broadcasting Corp based in New York, was on a Norwegian Airlines flight from Paris that landed at JFK shortly before 10pm (US time).

"They told us nothing from the flight deck. Only that the earliest the gate will be available will be in an hour 15 minutes from when we landed, an announcement greeted by huge sighs on our Norwegian Airlines flight from Paris," he said.
