6.1 quake off Solomons

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 was recorded off the Solomon Islands on Tuesday.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 8.40am local time (0940 NZT), 133km east of Kira Kira on San Cristobal island, 371km east-southeast of the capital Honiara.

It occurred at a depth of 52km.

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons in April last year triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands of others.
