Williams and a former Wallabies player James O'Connor were arrested near the Arc de Triomphe over the weekend for allegedly possessing cocaine and have been in custody since.

News agency AFP reported the two men had now been charged.

L'Equipe said Williams would appear before a tribunal this week charged with drug-buying, while O'Connor would be charged with drug use.

Both men had been released from custody, L'Equipe reported.

Last week another former All Black who also plays for the club, Dan Carter, was caught drink-driving in Paris.

Police apprehended Williams and former Wallabies player James O'Connor after they were allegedly caught handing over cash to a drug dealer outside a night club in the French capital at about 3am Saturday morning (local time).

Williams, 35, currently plays with Paris based French club Racing 92.

Racing 92 said in a statement that it had suspended Williams over the incident.
