Seven people, including four children, drowned yesterday when muddy floodwaters washed away their homes in heavy rain in the town of Carmen, in the province of Cebu.

Another person died in floods in the city of Danao, as a tropical depression passes over the country.

Sea travel in the central and eastern parts of the island nation has been suspended because of the storm, leaving about 4800 passengers stranded at ports.
