Las Vegas shooting: What you need to know

Gunman Stephen Paddock killed 58 people and injured more than 525 others, firing an an automatic weapon at festival-goers in Las Vegas.

  • The shooting took place just after 10pm local time.
  • Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the Las Vegas strip
  • The barrage of bullets fired into the crowd of 22,000 people lasted several minutes
  • Police have not established a motive but believe it was a lone attack and that the shooter was not a member of any militant group
  • Police were looking for Marilou Danley, 62, but later said she had been located outside the US and was not a suspect. She reportedly lived with Paddock at a Nevada retirement community
  • Reports of other shootings and blasts at other hotels proved false, police say
  • Parts of the city were shut down as armed police arrived at the scene
  • The shooter's brother, Eric Paddock, said the family was horrified and bewildered
  • Terrorist group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bloodbath, saying Paddock converted to Islam several months ago. The claim has been met with scepticism by the CIA and FBI
  • At a White House news conference, President Donald Trump called the shooting "an act of pure evil"
  • New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said there was no indication any New Zealanders were killed or injured in the attack.
