Western journalists kidnapped in Somalia

9:41 pm on 24 August 2008

Somalia's journalists' union has identified two western reporters who were kidnapped near Mogadishu.

It says the two, a Canadian and an Australian, were taken during a visit to camps for displaced civilians.

The union has named them as Nigel Brennan, a freelance Australian photojournalist and Amanda Lindhout, a Canadian reporter based in Baghdad.

A local translator and a driver were also seized.

The union says no formal claim of responsibility has been made nor any demands.

Abductions are common in Somalia, where Islamist insurgents are fighting the interim government and its Ethiopian military allies.
