Zimbabwe talks resume in South Africa

9:39 am on 30 August 2008

Talks on power-sharing in Zimbabwe resumed in South Africa on Friday to try to end a post-election political deadlock.

President Robert Mugabe and opposition MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai have failed to reach agreement in over a month of talks since Mr Mugabe was re-elected in a one-man election.

South Africa's deputy minister of foreign affairs Aziz Pahad said all parties would participate in the negotiations in South Africa and no deadline for an end to the talks was set.

Mr Mugabe has been in power since 1980. He reopened parliament this week and has said he will soon form a new government without the MDC.

Meanwhile, the government has lifted a ban on aid groups providing food and humanitarian assistance. They were banned before the election, on the grounds of helping the opposition.
