Bomb in Sri Lankan capital

8:17 am on 31 August 2008

A bomb has exploded in the commercial centre of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, wounding more than 40 people.

The bomb was concealed under a red satin-covered roadside stall in a busy area of the capital, a short distance from the main bus station and the railway terminal.

A bomb in the same area killed 111 people and wounded more than 750 in April 1987.

The attack on Saturday came a day after rebels accused government forces of setting off a roadside bomb and killing two civilians inside guerrilla-held territory.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but President Mahinda Rajapakse's office said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was believed to have carried out the bombing.
