McLaren to appeal F1 decision against Hamilton

6:47 am on 8 September 2008

The McLaren Formula One team intends to appeal against a stewards' decision that stripped championship leader Lewis Hamilton of victory in the Belgian Grand Prix.

However it is not clear whether any appeal will be allowed under the sport's rules.

Stewards decided Hamilton cut the chicane and gained an advantage while duelling against world champion Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) for the lead.

A retrospective penalty was imposed at the end of the race in the form of 25 seconds added to his race time.

That demoted Hamilton to third place and cut his championship lead over the race winner, Felipe Massa of Brazil, (Ferrari) to two points.
