Rescuers say it could take up to two weeks until a Tasmanian man who suffered serious injuries in Antarctica will reach Australian soil.

Dwayne Rooke broke both his ankles and his pelvis last Monday in a quad bike accident.

A doctor is looking after the injured man at Australia's Davis Station.

Australian Antarctic Division director Tony Press says they have dispatched the icebreaker, Aurora Australis, to evacuate him.

He says a helicopter rescue is impossible because of bad weather.
