A man in Solomon Islands has been arrrested in connection with a machete attack on a New Zealand policeman two months ago.

He surrendered to Australian soldiers on Saturday.

Constable Chris Renata of Auckland was attacked with a machete, leaving a 15cm gash in his leg, on 2 September.

Up to 60 Australian soldiers were helping Solomons and international police in the manhunt along the coast of the island of Guadalcanal.

The man has been charged with attempted murder and will appear in court on Monday.

Another man, wanted over the same attack and also for a series of murders dating back to the unrest five years ago, remains at large.
