South African police have caught a serial killer trying to behead one of his victims in his front yard using a pick and hammer.
SAPA news agency quoted Police Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela as saying: "It was very gruesome".
The man, 37, was shot in the leg by police after he charged them with the weapon outside his home in Engcobo in the Eastern Cape, where he sold liquor.
Four headless bodies were later found in a shallow grave at the house. Their heads were in plastic bags nearby. All were regular customers.
SAPA said police were contacted after the man was seen to fatally stab another man to death on Monday. He is expected to appear in a magistrate's court on Wednesday.
