North American Anglicans to split

11:59 am on 4 December 2008

A breakaway faction of the Anglican Church in North America is establishing a traditionalist church, in the United States and Canada.

The BBC reports it means there will be two Episcopal churches, as the Anglican Church is known there, in each country.

Many traditionalists in North America have been unhappy with some of the liberal views held by the Anglican Church, including the ordination of gay bishops.

However, doubts remain as to whether or how the new church will be recognised elsewhere in the world.
