Terry stripped of England captaincy

6:35 am on 6 February 2010

John Terry has been sacked as captain of the England football team following allegations he had an affair with a team-mate's former girlfriend.

The move followed a 12-minute meeting between Terry and England's head coach, Fabio Capello, at Football Association (FA) headquarters at Wembley.

In a statement, Capello said as team captain Terry had displayed extremely positive behaviour, but that he had to take into account other considerations and what was best for all the England squad.

Sections of the media have been lambasting the married father-of-two over his alleged infidelity with Vanessa Perroncel, an underwear model who has a son with Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge but is now estranged from him.
