Bomb blast in NW Pakistan

6:02 am on 29 December 2008

At least 30 people have died in north-western Pakistan in a car bomb attack at a school being used as a polling station.

Police say the bomb went off during a by-election in the district of Buner, on the edge of the Swat valley.

The bomb destroyed the school, trapping people under the rubble. Two police were among the dead and 15 hurt.

The Taliban has told the BBC the attack was in retaliation for an attack on its fighters a few months ago.
