US tightens air security after bomb plot

The authorities in the United States have tightened airline security procedures after the main suspect in last week's failed car bomb plot in New York was able to board a flight for Dubai.

Faisal Shahzad, 30, an American citizen of Pakistani origin, was arrested as the plane was about to take off.

In a move to stop known suspects from boarding planes, airlines must now check no-fly lists within two hours of being told of updates to watch-lists, the BBC reports.

Faisal Shahzad has admitted trying to detonate a car bomb in Times Square, having learnt how to make it in Pakistan, court papers say.

He faces terrorism and explosives charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and transporting an explosive device with the intent to kill.
