Fiji's interim Prime Minister has taken over another portfolio, adding the sugar industry to his list of responsibilities.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama is already head of the military and interim Finance Minister, and also the interim Foreign Minister.

In announcing the re-assignment, Commodore Bainimarama said he would like to drive and expedite the sugar industry reforms in an effort to ensure viability and sustainable survival of the industry.

Radio New Zealand International reports he is specifically interested in the effective implementation of the recommendations of a recent review of the financial and operational viability of the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

Commodore Bainimarama says he is looking forward to working closely with all industry stakeholders.

Commodore Bainimarama came to power in a coup in December 2006 and appointed himself interim prime minister the following month.
