Eastwood tops weekend box office

Clint Eastwood's latest movie topped the weekend box office in North America on Sunday.

Gran Torino is directed by and stars Eastwood, 78, who plays a Korean War veteran who takes on members of a street gang.

The suburban drama earned an estimated $US29 million in the three days since opening nationally on Friday.

It has made a total of $US40.5 million since it began showing in select theatres four weeks ago.

Another work directed by Eastwood, Changeling, earned $US9.4 million during its first weekend of national screenings.

Bride Wars, starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson, opened in second place at the weekend.

After two weekends on top, Marley & Me fell to fourth place. The family dog story, starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, has earned $US123.7 million to date.
