Movie ticket sales up in 2008

Australians went to the movies last year as economic times became tough.

A total $A946 million was spent on cinema tickets making 2008 the highest grossing year on record.

According to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia, box

office revenue increased by 6% on 2007, and 4% on 2004, the previous best year.

The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger in his last completed film, was the top movie.

Mamma Mia! was next, followed by Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Quantum of Solace and Sex and the City.

Sixth was Australia - the only locally-made film to make the top 10.
