Cholera threat shifts to rural areas in Zimbabwe

8:38 pm on 22 January 2009

A cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe is spreading to rural areas.

United Nations agencies say cholera has killed nearly 2500 people and infected more than 40,000 there.

The disease has also spread to neighbouring countries, including South Africa.

World Vision says people with the disease have quit heavily-infected urban centres for the countryside.

It says the cholera is not under control and reports of new outbreaks in villages continue to be received.
