Australian actor Heath Ledger has been nominated for an Oscar on the anniversary of his death.

He was found dead from an accidental prescription drug overdose in his New York apartment 12 months ago.

Ledger, 28, is nominated for best supporting actor for his performance as a psychotic villain, The Joker, in the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight.

The nominations, were announced by former Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, in Hollywood at 0530 local time on Thursday.

If Ledger is honoured with the Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood on 22 February, it will be the first posthumous Academy Award for an actor since another Australian, Peter Finch, did it for Network in 1977.

Ledger was also nominated in 2006 for his role as a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain.
