Budget still in surplus - Australian govt

9:42 am on 23 January 2009

The Australian government says the federal budget is still in surplus, but only just.

Two months ago, the government revised its expected budget surplus from $A22 billion to $A5 billion.

The ABC reports many economists believe the budget has slipped into the red since then as the global economy continues to slow.

But Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner says the budget is still in the black.

However, he says: "The estimates will be changing on a daily basis, both of tax receipts and outlays."
